Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans

Medicare prescription drug plans help you cover the costs of medications that you need. It is offered to everyone on Medicare, but it is optional. Even if you don't take a lot of prescription drugs, it is strongly recommended to get Medicare drug coverage.

If you choose not to get coverage when you are first eligible and do not have another creditable prescription drug coverage (for example, from an employer), or do not qualify for Extra Help, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty which is charged for as long as you have drug coverage.

What the Drug Plans Cover

All prescription drug plans are required to cover a wide range of medications that people on Medicare take, including most drugs in certain protected classes, like cancer or HIV/AIDS. A formulary is the plan's list of covered drugs, and each plan differs in which ones are covered. Medications are also grouped into different "tiers," with each tier costing different amounts. Tier 1 consists of most generic drugs and is the least expensive. The higher the tier, the more costly they are.

Two Ways to Get Drug Coverage

  • Through the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D, also called PDPs). These plans add prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private Fee-For-Service (PFFS) Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans.

  • Through a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) or other Medicare health plan that offers drug coverage. You get all of your Medicare coverage (Part A Hospital & Part B Medical) and Part D, through these plans. You must be enrolled in Parts A & B to join a Medicare Advantage plan. Not all Medicare Advantage plans offer drug coverage.
